This handbook was written for the students of Type and Media, a one year Master programme in type design at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague.
Its aim is to explain how to carve letters in stone. It describes the course, wich consists of a sequence of three carving ecercises and many practical aspects relating to these,
such as choosing and preparing stone, learning about tools, and sketching and making a drawing for lettering that is suitable for carving. It contains contributions by students and colleagues, and many illustrations.
Françoise Berserik is a book typografer who took up letter carving as a graphic design student in Arnhem. She has been teaching this carving class for many years.
